China Fusion Energy and nine partners to build 25T superconducting tokamak magnet test line by 2028

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

China Fusion Energy Co. , Ltd. is leading a consortium of nine institutions from the Yangtze River Delta to develop high-temperature superconducting strong-field tokamak magnets for the China Circulating Loop No. 4 fusion platform. Announced at the 2026 Nuclear Fusion Energy Conference on August 25, 2026, the consortium plans to build the first 25T high-temperature superconducting strong-field magnet development and testing line by 2028, with a prototype magnet completed by 2030. The project aims to validate magnet reliability under complex fusion conditions.

At the 2026 Nuclear Fusion Energy Conference held on August 25, 2026, it was announced that China Fusion Energy Co. , Ltd. is leading a consortium of nine units from the Yangtze River Delta, including Shanghai Superconducting, Eastern Superconducting, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Electric Nuclear Power Group, Chaoci New Energy, Energy Singularity, Hangyang Group, and Yixi Technology. The consortium will jointly tackle the development of high-temperature superconducting strong-field tokamak magnets to meet the needs of the China Circulating Loop No. 4 fusion device.

The consortium's goal is to establish the capability and engineering technology system for developing high-temperature superconducting strong-field tokamak magnets. It plans to complete the first 25T high-temperature superconducting strong-field magnet development and testing line by 2028, and to finish prototype magnet development by 2030.

China Circulating Loop No. 4 is the world's first high-temperature superconducting strong-field steady-state burning fusion experimental platform, which will systematically verify the reliability of 25T high-temperature superconducting strong-field magnets under complex fusion environments. The SPARC device in the United States and the STEP device in the United Kingdom also adopt the high-temperature superconducting technology route.
