In the first half of 2026, the number of commercial performances nationwide (excluding those at entertainment venues) reached 324,300 shows, up 1.96% year on year. Box office revenue stood at RMB 30.408 billion, up 9.41%, and audience numbers reached 98.8118 million person-times, up 5.28%. The value created by the performance market far exceeds ticket revenue; each event drives a chain of related spending in transport, accommodation, dining, tourism, and retail, making it a key driver of quality expansion in service consumption.

Large-scale concerts, music festivals, and other performance projects continued to heat up. In the first half, there were 1,300 commercial performances with an audience of at least 5,000, up 13.06% year on year. Box office revenue reached RMB 17.111 billion, up 17.70%, and attendance hit 23.2828 million person-times, a surge of 20.37%. Amid the trend of cross-city attendance, culture and tourism, performance, and railway authorities in multiple localities coordinated to launch over 100 fan special trains, linking transport, local tourism, dining and accommodation, shopping and leisure, and other diverse consumption scenarios, extending the industry chain and unleashing the multiplier effect of the performance economy.

High-quality stage productions continued to penetrate second- and third-tier cities and county-level markets. The ethnic dance drama "Dream of the Red Chamber" toured nationwide with additional shows in multiple cities; the intangible-heritage-themed "Awakening Lion" covered more than ten cities; classic plays such as "Going North," "Su Dongpo," and "Teahouse" were staged in third- and fourth-tier cities. These productions reduce the time cost and financial barrier for the public to enjoy high art, promoting a more balanced allocation of cultural resources.

Composite entertainment and consumption spaces centered on performance content are emerging faster. Chengdu has built an immersive performance district around Kuanzhai Alley, offering nearly 70 featured immersive shows that link performance spending with street commerce. The Shanghai Concert Hall has forged cross-sector links with technology, arts, and cultural creativity to create signature cultural festivals, expanding the value of performance spaces. Open-air performance venues are being repurposed in alleys, commercial districts, and industrial parks, blending into the urban environment and enhancing the consumer experience.

New cultural tourism performance projects have been launched successively. These include the water-edge walking performance "Journey on the Canal" in Beijing, the cultural tourism integrated show "Dream of Qingcheng" in Dujiangyan, Sichuan, the cave immersive live performance "Travels of Xu Xiake" in Guilin, Guangxi, and the night-time immersive performance "Nightscape of the Wohe River" in Bozhou, Anhui. Drawing on local landscapes and cultural heritage, they create new cultural tourism experiences. These projects strengthen audiences' immersive participation and serve as important levers for promoting culture-tourism integration and boosting consumption.
