China's New-Type Energy Storage Capacity Hits 153 Million kW by End-June 2026, Up 61%
As of end-June 2026, China's completed and operational new-type energy storage installed capacity reached 153 million kW / 396 million kWh, up 61% year-on-year. In the first half of 2026, equivalent utilization hours for new-type energy storage in the State Grid operating area reached 573 hours, up 9 hours year-on-year, while the Southern Grid operating area recorded 626 hours, up 41 hours.
The China New-Type Energy Storage Development Report (2026), released by the National Energy Administration, shows that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China's new-type energy storage industry moved from the early stage of commercial application into a new phase of large-scale development. National installed capacity rose from 3 million kW at the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan period to 136 million kW by end-2025, broadly doubling year on year. In 2023, 2024 and 2025, national equivalent utilization hours for new-type energy storage reached 611, 911 and 1,195 hours respectively, effectively fulfilling a system regulation role.
