Doubao Clarifies Hotel Fees: No Paid Promotion, Composite Rate Raised to About 12%
Doubao, the AI assistant channel on Douyin Life Services, has clarified that it does not engage in paid promotion for hotels. Effective August 10, hotel orders via Doubao are subject to a software service fee of 11.4% plus a 0.6% payment handling fee, for a composite rate of about 12%, up from 8%. The change follows a platform policy reclassifying Doubao as a specific transaction channel. Doubao charges only on completed transactions, and hotels may opt in or out voluntarily. The rate sits within the industry range of 10-15% for online travel platforms.
Since August 10, Douyin Life Services has applied an independent fee rate to hotel orders from the Doubao channel: a software service fee of 11.4% plus a payment handling fee of 0.6%, bringing the composite rate to about 12%.
The adjustment stems from a policy change on the Douyin Life Services platform. On July 27, the platform issued the '2026 Policy on Software Service Fees for Specific Transaction Channels on the Douyin Life Services Platform'. Effective August 10, Doubao was reclassified from 'natural traffic' to a 'specific transaction channel', with the fee rate raised from 8% to 12%. In an industry comparison, current composite commission ratios on online travel platforms generally range from 10% to 15%, and some platforms can exceed 15% when value-added services are added. Doubao's 12% rate sits at the industry median.
Doubao currently charges on a per-transaction basis. User clicks, views, and consultations incur no fees; merchants pay the channel service fee only after an order is completed and payment is made. The platform does not force hotels to join the channel, and merchants can choose to opt in or out based on their own operating conditions.
