Intel Said to Prepare Raptor Lake Next Desktop Chip With 8P+8E, 125W
Intel is reportedly preparing a desktop processor called Raptor Lake Next, with an 8P+8E, 125W model positioned as a successor to the Core i5-14600K. The existing Core i5-14600K has 6 P-cores and 8 E-cores, 14 cores and 20 threads, and 125W base power. The reported successor would add two P-cores, for 16 cores and 24 threads. Intel has not officially confirmed the lineup, models, frequencies, cache, pricing, or launch timing.
The current Core i5-14600K uses 6 performance cores (P-cores) and 8 efficiency cores (E-cores), for 14 cores and 20 threads, with a base power of 125W. Information not yet confirmed by Intel indicates that a desktop processor called Raptor Lake Next will succeed the Core i5-14600K with 8 P-cores and 8 E-cores, for 16 cores and 24 threads, while retaining a 125W base power, adding two P-cores over the existing model. The model, frequencies, cache capacity, and other details have not been officially confirmed.
Among Intel's current 14th Gen Core products, 8 P-cores had previously appeared mainly in higher-end models. The Core i7-14700K has 8 P-cores and 12 E-cores, for 20 cores; the Core i7-13700K has 8 P-cores and 8 E-cores, with a base power of 125W. Based on the current unconfirmed information, Raptor Lake Next is not a new CPU architecture but continues to use the Raptor Lake design to extend the life of the LGA 1700 platform, and is not part of the same product line as Bartlett Lake, which targets the embedded market.
On platform compatibility, the existing LGA 1700 platform supports both DDR4 and DDR5 memory. Some existing 600-series and 700-series motherboards can be upgraded directly to the new processors with corresponding BIOS support, without replacing the entire platform. DDR5 memory prices have recently risen sharply.
Existing test data show that the Core i7-13700K leads the Core i5-14600K by about 22% in the Cinebench 2024 multi-threaded test, by about 16% in the Cinebench R23 multi-threaded test, and by about 18% in PassMark. In single-threaded performance, the difference between the two is not significant. With the same graphics card and at 1080p resolution, the Core i7-13700K leads the Core i5-14600K by roughly 2% to 10% in some games.
As of now, Intel has not officially announced the Raptor Lake Next series, nor confirmed specific models, frequencies, cache capacity, pricing, or the final launch timing. The 8P+8E configuration, 125W rating, and positioning as a successor to the Core i5-14600K remain unconfirmed information.
