Microsoft to Rebuild Windows 11 Native Apps with AI-Assisted Coding Tools
Microsoft is shifting Windows 11 app development away from web-based frameworks toward native code, using AI-assisted tools to accelerate the process. The company reports that native apps rebuilt this way launch four to six times faster and cut runtime memory usage by over 60%. Microsoft is adjusting its Windows 11 application ecosystem to reduce reliance on web technologies built on the Chromium engine. Previously, Microsoft and third-party developers widely used web frameworks such as Electron and Edge WebView2 to build desktop applications, lowering cross-platform development costs. However, these applications consume significant system resources at runtime and suffer from slow startup and inconsistent interaction with the operating system. Microsoft has now shifted its development focus toward desktop architectures based on native frameworks, incorporating AI-assisted coding tools.
At its annual developer technology event in 2026, Microsoft's software architecture team demonstrated a new development workflow. Using an AI code generation model integrated into Visual Studio, developers can produce a desktop client with full basic functionality running on Windows native frameworks—covering C#, C++, and WinUI 3/Windows App SDK—in about 30 minutes. Previously, a native program of comparable scope typically required an experienced engineering team several days to several weeks to complete, including UI drawing, low-level API calls, and memory safety management.
Microsoft stated that web-wrapped desktop programs impose an additional burden at the desktop operating system level, as each application often bundles a complete browser runtime environment. This leads to higher memory usage during multitasking on Windows 11, affecting battery life and responsiveness. To address this, Microsoft is using AI to generate native user layouts and business logic, and to support migrating and refactoring existing web-wrapped code into local native architectures.
Internal performance tests show that refactored native applications achieve cold-start speeds approximately four to six times faster than their web-wrapped versions, with runtime memory overhead reduced by more than 60%. Compatibility has also improved for features such as adaptive dark mode, mica material, smooth animations, and system-level security sandboxes. Microsoft has begun reorganizing its official applications internally, including new versions of Teams, Outlook, and several preinstalled system tools, with multiple apps previously built on web architectures now scheduled for transition to native code.
