Norway July Salmon Exports Hit Record; China Becomes No. 2 Market, US Falls to Fifth

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Norway's salmon exports set a monthly record in July, with volumes reaching 147,891 tonnes and value at NOK 11.6 billion. Exports to China surged 27% year-on-year to 12,464 tonnes, making China the second-largest destination after Poland. The US slipped to fifth place from second a year earlier, affected by tariffs. Norway's seafood council data showed the shift, with US tariffs now at 12.5% on Norwegian goods and 10% on EU goods.

Norway exported 12,464 tonnes of salmon to China in July, a record monthly high and up 27% year-on-year, lifting China to the position of Norway's second-largest salmon export market, behind only Poland. The Netherlands ranked third. Data released by the Norwegian Seafood Council on August 5 showed a significant rise in volumes to China during the month, driving the country's climb in the ranking of Norwegian salmon export destinations.

The US slipped from second place a year earlier to fifth in the same period. In 2025, the US imposed a 15% tariff on Norwegian goods, prompting Norwegian exporters to adjust their market strategies. Under new US tariffs that took effect last month, Norwegian imports are now subject to a 12.5% duty, while EU imports face a 10% tariff. Both of the world's two largest salmon producers, Mowi and SalMar, are headquartered in Norway.

Norway's total salmon exports in July rose 10% year-on-year to 147,891 tonnes, with an export value of NOK 11.6 billion, setting new July records for both volume and value. The figures cover all export activity during the month and do not include adjustments by individual market.
