Pinglu Canal Opens as 3D-Printed Buffer Sleeves Pass Acceptance

The Pinglu Canal officially opened to navigation on September 16, 2026.

In the construction of the project, the team of Professor Chen Yun at Wuhan University of Technology achieved a technical breakthrough in the field of water conservancy engineering, applying metal 3D printing to labyrinth buffer sleeves for ship-lock hydraulic cylinders for the first time.

The buffer sleeves come in two specifications and were formed in one piece through 165 hours of continuous printing on a Farsoon four-laser FS350M machine.

The technology passed acceptance in 2025, overcoming the challenge of buffering the opening and closing of high-speed, heavy-load ship-lock valves.
