Saab Shows Full-Scale A3-001 Supersonic Loyal Wingman Model, A1 Prototype to Fly in 2027

At the Swedish Armed Forces anniversary air show at Malmen Air Base in Linköping, Sweden, Saab displayed a full-scale model of the A3-001, a supersonic loyal wingman autonomous fighter concept. The model is comparable in size to the JAS 39 Gripen E and is powered by a General Electric F414 turbofan engine, enabling supersonic flight. Its tailless blended wing design, short-cropped compound delta swept wings, and mid-cranked wing structure aim to enhance stealth, while side air intakes, serrated engine exhaust nozzles, and an internal weapons bay are designed to reduce radar and infrared signatures.

The A3-001 is intended to operate alongside manned fighters and airborne early warning aircraft. The weapons bay accommodates precision-guided munitions and air-to-air missiles, and the aircraft integrates a multi-domain sensor suite. Maximum speed and performance details remain classified. The program entered an accelerated development cycle in August 2026, spanning 15 to 18 months. The plan is to conduct the A1 prototype's first flight in 2027 to test basic flight characteristics and aerodynamic performance, followed by the A2 demonstrator with enhanced capabilities, leading to a fielded system by 2030.

Following Sweden's accession to NATO in 2024, government policy has prioritized the domestic aerospace technology base, including finding a successor to the Gripen and maintaining competitiveness against U. S. collaborative combat aircraft and Anglo-European next-generation fighter programs. The A3-001 project responds to pressure from major military powers accelerating the development and deployment of new systems. Once operational, the A3 will perform missions such as suppression of enemy air defenses, electronic attack, and strike operations, while cooperating with the JAS 39 Gripen E and the GlobalEye platform. Peter Nilsson, head of Saab's advanced programs business unit, stated that the company is in an intensive development phase, with plans to fly an unmanned demonstrator with fighter-like characteristics before 2030 to support Sweden in considering its future options.
