Shanghai Port First to Simultaneously Bunker LNG and Domestic Biomethanol at Offshore Anchorage

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Shanghai Port completed its first simultaneous bunkering of two green fuels for international vessels at an offshore anchorage. On August 16, the LNG bunkering vessel Hai Gang Wei Lai and the methanol bunkering vessel Hai Gang Zhi Yuan refueled ships at Lvhuashan anchorage. Hai Gang Zhi Yuan supplied domestically produced biomethanol to the Maltese-flagged CMA CGM Osmium, while Hai Gang Wei Lai delivered LNG to the Singapore-flagged Tengcheng. The operation ran from August 15 to 16, with most biomethanol sourced from the Shanghai Electric Taonan project. This capability reduces port fees and waiting times for vessels.

Shanghai Port has for the first time simultaneously bunkered two types of green fuel for international vessels at an offshore anchorage on a large scale. On August 16, the LNG bunkering vessel Hai Gang Wei Lai and the methanol bunkering vessel Hai Gang Zhi Yuan completed fuel supply operations in succession at Lvhuashan anchorage. Among them, Hai Gang Zhi Yuan refueled the Maltese-flagged vessel CMA CGM Osmium with domestically produced biomethanol, while Hai Gang Wei Lai refueled the Singapore-flagged vessel Tengcheng with liquefied natural gas. The dual-vessel bunkering operation ran from August 15 to 16, and most of the biomethanol supplied was produced at the Shanghai Electric Taonan project.

Completing clean fuel bunkering at an anchorage eliminates expenses such as berth fees, tug fees, and pilotage fees that would otherwise be incurred when a vessel calls at port. It also shortens the time vessels spend waiting for berths, thereby reducing the refueling costs for international ships. This operation has enabled Shanghai Port to supply different green fuels to multiple vessels simultaneously at an offshore anchorage, and the relevant operational procedures have been fully executed in practice.
