SoftBank Group builds US AI data centre; OpenAI considers tenancy and negotiates $250 billion Nvidia credit

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

SoftBank Group is building a large-scale AI data centre in the US state of Ohio, with construction set to start this year as part of a $500 billion Japan–US investment. OpenAI is considering a tenancy and is in discussions with Nvidia for a credit guarantee of roughly $250 billion (¥40 trillion) to sign a lease and cover facility-construction debt. The guarantee would make it easier for the unprofitable, privately held AI company to access bank financing.

SoftBank Group (SBG) is building an AI-focused data centre in the United States. US AI company OpenAI is considering taking space in the facility and is negotiating with US semiconductor firm Nvidia to obtain a credit guarantee of approximately $250 billion (about ¥40 trillion) in order to sign a lease and secure a presence. The guarantee would cover lease costs for the data centre and debt required for facility construction. If the guarantee materialises, OpenAI—which has yet to turn a profit and is a private company—would find it easier to raise funds from financial institutions.

SBG announced in March that construction of the large-scale AI data centre would begin this year in the Midwestern US state of Ohio. The project is a Japan–US joint investment on a scale of $500 billion.
