Windows 11 Preview Adds Auto Theme Switching Based on Sunrise and Sunset

Microsoft is developing an automatic light and dark mode switching feature for Windows 11. A large number of strings related to automatic theme switching have appeared in the Windows 11 preview build, including one labeled "Schedule auto mode." Other strings indicate that the system can automatically switch between light and dark modes based on the user's local sunrise and sunset times.

Most mainstream operating systems already offer both dark and light modes, with dark mode primarily used in the evening to reduce screen glare. Automatic light and dark switching means the system changes to dark mode after sunset and back to light mode the next day, based on either a user-defined schedule or the local sunrise and sunset times.

Windows 10 already supports dark mode, but Microsoft has not yet offered automatic light and dark switching, requiring users to switch manually or rely on third-party software. Now Microsoft is developing this automatic switching feature in the Windows 11 test build, with many strings referencing automatic theme switching. Another option would prevent automatic switching while the user is actively using the computer, applying the scheduled theme only when the system detects it is idle, to avoid sudden changes during work or meetings. In macOS, Apple automatically switches according to the schedule, even if the user is actively using the Mac.
