Canada Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs on US$20 Billion of US Goods, Doubling Steel Duties to 50%

Canada announced on August 25 that it will impose retaliatory tariffs on approximately US$20 billion of American goods, effective September 8. The measures cover about 700 US products at rates of 15%, 25%, or 50%, with US steel duties doubling to 50%. Ottawa also launched a C$7.5 billion support package for affected businesses and workers, after last-minute trade talks with Washington collapsed. The United States has already imposed 50% tariffs on US$20 billion of Canadian goods.

The Canadian government also unveiled a C$7.5 billion aid package to support businesses and workers affected by the new US tariffs.

Trade negotiations between Canada and the United States collapsed at the last minute. Washington has already imposed 50% tariffs on US$20 billion of Canadian goods. The United States had earlier demanded that Canadian leaders fall in line, or face consequences more severe than the existing tariffs.
