Canada Loses 42,000 Jobs in August as Trade Dispute with US Bites
Canada's employment fell by 42,000 in August, according to Statistics Canada, following cumulative gains of 181,000 jobs from April to July. Export-dependent industries saw an average layoff rate of 0.9% over the past year, higher than the 0.7% average in other sectors, amid US tariffs on Canadian goods.
Statistics Canada reported on September 4 that employment in Canada decreased by 42,000 in August. This followed cumulative job gains of 181,000 from April through July.
The agency's data also showed that over the past 12 months, industries reliant on exports to the United States experienced an average layoff rate of 0.9%, compared with 0.7% for other sectors. The United States has recently imposed additional tariffs on certain goods imported from Canada.
