NFRA Releases Q2 Insurance Data: Total Assets RMB 43.9 Trillion, Up 6.2% from Start of Year

The National Financial Regulatory Administration released second-quarter 2026 data showing total assets of insurers and insurance asset managers reached RMB 43.9 trillion, up 6.2% from the start of the year. Banking assets grew 6.6% year on year to RMB 498 trillion. Inclusive loans to small and micro enterprises rose 8% to RMB 38.9 trillion, while premium income increased 3.2% to RMB 3.9 trillion in the first half. Commercial banks posted net profit of RMB 1.2 trillion, with capital adequacy at 15.26% and solvency ratios well above regulatory minimums.

Data released by the National Financial Regulatory Administration (NFRA) on August 14 show that at the end of the second quarter of 2026, the outstanding balance of inclusive loans to small and micro enterprises by banking financial institutions stood at RMB 38.9 trillion, up 8% year on year; the outstanding balance of inclusive agriculture-related loans was RMB 15 trillion, up 7.5% year on year. In the first half of 2026, insurance companies recorded original premium income of RMB 3.9 trillion, up 3.2% year on year; claims and benefits paid amounted to RMB 1.4 trillion, up 3.8% year on year; and the number of new policies issued reached 66.8 billion, up 27.4% year on year.

Total assets of the banking and insurance industries continued to grow. At the end of the second quarter, the total assets of banking financial institutions in China reached RMB 498 trillion, up 6.6% year on year. Among them, large commercial banks had total assets of RMB 221.6 trillion, up 8.5% year on year, accounting for 44.5% of the total; joint-stock commercial banks had total assets of RMB 80.4 trillion, up 6.2% year on year, accounting for 16.1%. The total assets of insurance companies and insurance asset management companies stood at RMB 43.9 trillion, up 6.2% from the beginning of the year. Of this, property insurance companies had RMB 3.4 trillion, up 8.4% from the start of the year; life insurance companies had RMB 38.7 trillion, up 6.2%; reinsurers had RMB 879 billion, up 2.5%; and insurance asset management companies had RMB 149.1 billion, up 2.4%.

In terms of commercial bank operations and risk coverage, in the first half of 2026, commercial banks cumulatively achieved net profit of RMB 1.2 trillion. At the end of the second quarter, the average return on capital was 7.72%, and the average return on assets was 0.58%. The provision coverage ratio of commercial banks was 202.87%; the capital adequacy ratio of commercial banks (excluding branches of foreign banks) was 15.26%. Regarding the solvency of the insurance industry, at the end of the second quarter, the average comprehensive solvency adequacy ratio of insurance companies was 180.6%, and the core solvency adequacy ratio was 133.5%, both above the regulatory standards of 100% and 50%, respectively.
