High-Level Meeting Marks 5th Anniversary of Global Development Initiative in Beijing, Over 130 Countries
A high-level meeting marking the fifth anniversary of the Global Development Initiative was held in Beijing on July 28. Over 130 countries and international organizations support the initiative, which has mobilized more than $23 billion in funds, implemented over 1,800 cooperation projects, and trained more than 200,000 professionals. The Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative has expanded to 88 countries.
On July 28, a high-level meeting marking the fifth anniversary of the Global Development Initiative was held in Beijing, with the theme "Global Development Initiative: Five Years On, Building a Sustainable Future Together." Senior UN officials, envoys from member states of the Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative, representatives of UN development agencies in China, and renowned experts and scholars attended the meeting.
Five years ago, President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Development Initiative during the general debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly. To date, over 130 countries and international organizations have supported and participated in the initiative, with its achievements benefiting people in more than 120 countries. Leveraging the UN Peace and Development Fund, the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, and other mechanisms, the Global Development Initiative has mobilized over $23 billion in funds, implemented more than 1,800 "small yet smart" cooperation projects, and trained over 200,000 professionals. Specific projects include Juncao technology for global poverty reduction, a sustainable development satellite for synchronized data sharing, and the "Mazu" intelligent meteorological early warning system.
The Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative has expanded to 88 countries. Under the framework of the initiative, Tanzania has implemented a project using satellite data to empower agricultural production.
