Hong Kong Gross National Income Rises 7.9% to RMB966.1 Billion in Second Quarter of 2026
Hong Kong's gross national income at current market prices rose 7.9% year on year to RMB966.1 billion in the second quarter of 2026, while gross domestic product was estimated at RMB842.4 billion, up 6.9%. The RMB123.7 billion excess of gross national income over GDP, equal to 14.7% of GDP, was mainly due to net inflows of investment income. In real terms, gross national income grew 5.3% and GDP 4.3%.
In the second quarter of 2026, Hong Kong's gross national income at current market prices rose 7.9% year on year to RMB966.1 billion. Gross domestic product at current market prices for the same quarter was estimated at RMB842.4 billion, up 6.9% year on year. Gross national income exceeded GDP by RMB123.7 billion in the quarter, equivalent to 14.7% of GDP, mainly reflecting net inflows of investment income. After adjusting for price changes, Hong Kong's gross national income rose 5.3% year on year in the second quarter of 2026, while GDP grew 4.3% in real terms over the same period.
In the second quarter of 2026, total inflows of primary income, which mainly comprises investment income, amounted to RMB664.6 billion, up 6.4% year on year and equivalent to 78.9% of GDP for the quarter. Total outflows of primary income also rose 4.5% to RMB540.9 billion, equivalent to 64.2% of GDP for the quarter. Among the main components of investment income inflows, direct investment income rose 9.5% year on year, mainly due to higher direct investment income earned abroad by some large local enterprises; portfolio investment income rose 4.8% year on year, mainly due to higher interest income from non-local debt securities earned by local investors. Among the main components of investment income outflows, direct investment income rose 5.1% year on year, mainly due to higher direct investment income earned locally by some large multinational enterprises; portfolio investment income rose 3.5%, mainly due to higher interest income from local debt securities earned by non-local investors.
By country or territory, the mainland of China remained the largest source of Hong Kong's total primary income inflows in the second quarter of 2026, accounting for 40.6% of total inflows for the quarter, followed by the Cayman Islands at 11.3%. For total primary income outflows, the mainland of China and the British Virgin Islands remained the largest destinations, accounting for 30.3% and 20.5% of total outflows for the quarter respectively.
