SK Group Chairman Files Supreme Court Appeal Over Record 944 Billion Won Divorce Ruling

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of South Korea against the divorce property settlement ruling issued by the Seoul High Court on July 24. Under the ruling, Chey is required to pay 944 billion won (approximately $643 million) to his former wife. Chey's legal team said on Friday that the appeal aims to minimize negative impacts on shareholders and the group's management and operations. The payment amount represents roughly 12% of Chey's personal wealth. SK Group's businesses span semiconductors, energy, and telecommunications.
This appeal means the long-running legal dispute will continue, as the case has become the highest-value divorce proceeding in South Korean history. Chey and his former wife, Roh So-young, married in 1988, a union that linked several prominent political and business families in South Korea. The couple had three children. In 2015, the marriage publicly frayed when Chey disclosed that he had a child with another woman, initiating a protracted legal battle between the parties.
