Taiwan Minister Says September Review to Decide Electricity Prices, Taipower Losses Reach NT$376.4 Billion
Taiwan Economic Minister Gong Mingxin said an electricity price review meeting will be held in September to decide on adjustments, with the ministry prioritizing livelihoods and price stability. Taipower has accumulated losses of NT$376.4 billion, including NT$25.7 billion in the first half of 2026. Gong dismissed election-linked speculation, insisting the review will have no electoral considerations.
On the day, Gong Mingxin made the remarks before a special report to the Legislative Yuan's Economics Committee.
Taipower has in recent years shouldered the task of stabilizing prices, absorbing international energy price increases, leading to massive losses. In the first half of 2026, losses reached NT$25.7 billion, bringing cumulative losses to NT$376.4 billion. Amid recurring tensions in the Middle East and persistent uncertainty over international energy prices, whether Taiwan's electricity tariffs will be adjusted in October has drawn attention.
Gong responded that the electricity price review meeting will convene in September, with the final decision resting with the review committee. From the Ministry of Economic Affairs' standpoint, "caring for people's livelihoods and stabilizing prices have always been our policy." The ministry will provide more evidence and express its position appropriately for the committee's reference. Regarding outside discussions linking the review to the 2026 nine-in-one elections, Gong stressed that the review will be conducted "without electoral considerations."
