Ukraine Finds Nvidia Jetson Orin Chip in Russian S-71 Cruise Missile Debris

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Directorate reported finding an Nvidia Jetson Orin NX 16GB module in debris of Russia's S-71 Monochrome cruise missile. The TE980M-A1 chip, released in early 2023, supports autonomous target search. Nvidia closed its Russia operations in 2022 and said it cannot track secondary-market circulation of the chips. Ukrainian officials said the discovery shows export controls are not effectively functioning and called for stronger international sanctions.

Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Directorate reported this week that an Nvidia Jetson Orin module was found in the debris of Russia's S-71 Monochrome cruise missile. The S-71M is an air-launched weapon equipped with optical sensors and an onboard computing system that can operate under human supervision or in fully autonomous mode.

Photographs released by the intelligence agency show the chip bearing the TE980M-A1 marking, which corresponds to the Jetson Orin NX 16GB that Nvidia released in early 2023. The hardware is not data-center grade, but is a computing component designed for autonomous systems.

Nvidia closed its Russia office in 2022 and halted direct sales. The TE980M-A1 chip was released after Nvidia's withdrawal from the Russian market, and Ukrainian intelligence said the chip reached Russia through other channels. Kyiv also noted that the captured hardware reflects shortcomings in Russia's domestic technology manufacturing capabilities.

A company spokesperson said the chips should not be in Russia, but that Russia can obtain components through channels beyond Nvidia's control. Nvidia said used Jetson chips circulate through many dealer channels and the company cannot track them in real time after sale, and that it will take action if it identifies customers that violate US export controls.

Current US export controls strictly limit shipments of advanced chips to Russia. The latest Ukrainian intelligence disclosure also mentioned Chinese-made electronic components found in Russian weapons. The exact route by which the Nvidia component arrived remains unclear. The Defense Intelligence Directorate said in its report that the evidence indicates the existing export-control system is not functioning effectively, and stressed that the discovery of an Nvidia chip in a new Russian missile underscores the urgency of increasing sanctions pressure and strengthening international coordination.
