Vitalik Buterin Updates Ethereum Roadmap, Prioritizing Quantum Resistance, Privacy, AI Security
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has updated the network's 2023 technical roadmap, elevating quantum safety, privacy protection, and AI-assisted security as new priorities. The revised draft introduces stronger post-quantum privacy and scaling mechanisms, along with a push to simplify Ethereum's technical specifications. Buterin emphasized that formal verification, enabled by modern AI tools, is essential for security. Ethereum has accelerated preparations for a potential quantum threat, with the Ethereum Foundation forming a post-quantum team and Buterin proposing quantum-safe cryptography in his 'Simplify Ethereum' reform. He stated that Ethereum will be quantum-safe, privacy-first, secure, censorship-resistant, high-performance, scalable, and simple.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said that since the 2023 technical roadmap, quantum safety, privacy protection, and AI-assisted security have become higher priorities for Ethereum. Buterin posted on social platform X that he updated the 2023 roadmap, comparing its original goals with Ethereum's current "draft map," a working outline of the network's long-term technical priorities. He noted that the draft map includes new content entirely absent from the 2023 roadmap, reflecting a shift in priorities.
The new priorities include stronger privacy protection and scaling solutions designed for a post-quantum world, as well as a push for "spec simplification," which aims to simplify Ethereum's technical specifications. On scaling, Buterin said the new approach no longer seeks to maximize scaling for all Ethereum activities, but instead creates specialized mechanisms with stricter properties that are more conducive to scaling, while supporting the heaviest current and future loads of users and applications, such as token transfers, swaps, and privacy protocols.
Buterin said this can only be ensured secure through formal verification, which itself is only feasible with the help of modern AI tools.
Ethereum has accelerated preparations for "Q-day" and the potential threat of quantum computers. In January 2026, Buterin urged developers to adopt quantum-resistant cryptography before the threat becomes imminent, and the Ethereum Foundation subsequently formed a dedicated post-quantum team. In July, Buterin placed quantum safety and privacy at the core of his proposed "Simplify Ethereum" reform, which requires replacing quantum-vulnerable cryptography with quantum-safe alternatives. Buterin wrote: "Ethereum will be quantum-safe. Ethereum will put user privacy first. Ethereum will be secure. Ethereum will be censorship-resistant. Ethereum will be high-performance and scalable while meeting these requirements. Ethereum will be simple."
