Hang Seng Indexes Company proposed on August 10 to expand the Hang Seng Tech Index from 30 to 50 constituents and to elevate artificial intelligence to one of six core technology themes. The selection will draw from the Hang Seng Composite LargeCap and MidCap Index, with the top 40 by market capitalisation and the top 10 by 12-month revenue growth. Tencent fell about 2% over two sessions, while Alibaba dropped over 3% on August 12. The index, launched July 27, 2020, currently tracks 30 tech firms. The consultation follows a call by Financial Secretary Paul Chan to adjust indices to better reflect technology's rising weight.

Hang Seng Indexes Company published a consultation paper on August 10 proposing to expand the number of constituents in the Hang Seng Tech Index from 30 to 50 and to elevate artificial intelligence from a sub-theme of 'intelligentization' to one of six core technology themes. The selection universe is limited to constituents of the Hang Seng Composite LargeCap and MidCap Index, with stocks chosen according to 'market capitalisation group' and 'revenue growth group'. The market-cap group selects the top 40 by market capitalisation, while the revenue-growth group selects the top 10 by revenue growth over the past 12 months.

Tencent Holdings fell about 2% for two consecutive trading days, and Alibaba fell more than 3% on August 12. The Hang Seng Tech Index was officially launched on July 27, 2020, tracking the 30 largest technology companies listed in Hong Kong. In late June 2026, Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan publicly stated that some indices on the Hong Kong stock market had not kept pace with economic development, noting that while technology companies' share and trading volume had increased, some indices did not fully reflect this, and that efforts were needed to adjust index constituents. The consultation paper covers an increase in the number of constituents, a broader thematic coverage, and adjustments to the stock-selection mechanism, aiming to stay close to technological developments while maintaining the index's representativeness.
