Hong Kong stocks opened higher on August 17, 2026. The Hang Seng Index opened at 25,303 points, up 0.7%; the Hang Seng Tech Index opened 1.1% higher at 4,761 points; and the H-shares Index opened 71 points higher at 8,411 points. SenseTime opened up over 7%, and JD. com opened up over 3%. On Friday, U. S. stocks retreated on weak retail sales data, while the Golden Dragon Index, which tracks Chinese ADRs, rose 0.61%.
Early gains expanded, with the Hang Seng Index climbing as much as 410 points to a high of 25,527 points. As of 10:37 a. m. , the HSI stood at 25,503 points, up 386 points, or 1.54%; the H-shares Index was at 8,465 points, up 125 points, or 1.5%; and the Hang Seng Tech Index was at 4,795 points, up 88 points, or 1.88%.
Among individual stocks, Alibaba rose 2.2% to HK$122.5; Tencent gained 1.2% to HK$445.4; Meituan rose 1.5% to HK$88.5; Xiaomi fell 1.5% to HK$26; and JD. com rebounded 3.8% to HK$114.4. AI stocks diverged: Zhipu fell 6% to HK$1,194, while MiniMax (Xiyu Technology) rose 2% to HK$335.6. Gold miners broadly advanced: Zijin Mining rose 2.4% to HK$35.64; Zijin Gold International gained 4.8% on a 1.8-fold rise in interim profit; and Zhaojin Mining, CMOC, Shandong Gold, and Lingbao Gold also posted gains.
Sands China rose 4.2% despite a 3.6% drop in interim profit, as its dividend was doubled. WuXi AppTec, WuXi Biologics, and WuXi XDC advanced. HKEX rose 0.4%, HSBC gained 1.6%, and AIA rose 3.2%. Orient Overseas International rose 6%, the best-performing blue-chip for now, while J&T Express fell 1.5%, the weakest for the time being.
