New York Stocks Mixed on Aug 12: Dow Falls 0.04%, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Rise

New York's three major stock indices closed mixed on August 12. By the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 21.58 points, or 0.04%, to 53,770.27; the S&P 500 rose 20.30 points, or 0.26%, to 7,748.5; and the Nasdaq Composite gained 143.042 points, or 0.54%, to 26,588.49.

By sector, eight of the S&P 500's eleven major sectors advanced, while three declined. Real estate and technology led the gainers, rising 1.08% and 1.06% respectively; consumer discretionary and materials led the decliners, falling 1.40% and 1.19% respectively.
