Meituan and Suzhou Police Launch Feature to Extend Delivery Time for Red Light Waits

On July 31, Meituan and the Suzhou Public Security Bureau launched the official version of a “wait for light, stop timing” function for delivery riders, beginning road tests in Suzhou. The feature automatically calculates the time riders spend waiting at red lights and extends the delivery deadline accordingly. The pilot covers about 1,100 intersections in Suzhou’s Gusu District and Suzhou Industrial Park. Riders see a countdown and notification on their app, and after delivery, a popup shows cumulative wait time and the adjusted deadline. Beijing and Wuxi are also testing the function, with more than 20 other cities evaluating it.

China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) fined seven food delivery platforms a total of 3.597 billion yuan for operating 'ghost kitchens' — unlicensed vendors using fake credentials. The penalty, announced in April 2026, is the largest under the Food Safety Law and involved over 67,000 cake-related ghost shops. To prevent recurrence, SAMR will promote electronic certificates that enable automated verification of merchant qualifications, shifting from reactive enforcement to proactive prevention and smart regulation.

Meituan Monthly Pay Users Hit by Batch Unauthorized Charges; Firm Cites New Telecom Fraud

Users of Meituan's Monthly Pay service in Shaanxi, Guangdong, Gansu and other regions reported unauthorized batch charges from remote locations, with individual losses ranging from over 1,000 yuan to more than 4,000 yuan. The charges occurred during early morning hours, exploiting a small-amount no-password payment feature. Meituan responded that the incidents likely stem from a new type of telecom fraud, where criminals use malware links to remotely control victims' phones, purchase group-buy vouchers, and resell them. Police have launched investigations, and Meituan has upgraded risk controls and set up a dedicated channel to assist affected users.
