Apple Extends Free Satellite Connectivity for iPhone 14, 15 and 16 Users to Autumn 2027

Apple has disclosed through a footnote in an official press release that existing users of the iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series will receive an additional year of free access to satellite communication features. The policy was announced alongside the launch of the new iPhone 18 Pro series and the iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable model. This is the third time Apple has extended the free trial period for the communication feature since it first introduced satellite emergency assistance in 2022.

According to the details published by Apple, the extension applies to all existing users who activated an iPhone 14, iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 series device in a country or region where Apple's satellite communication service is supported, and who did so before midnight Pacific Time on September 9, 2026. Eligible users need take no additional steps; the free satellite service period tied to their device will automatically be extended by one year, to autumn 2027. For new users purchasing the latest iPhone models, Apple is continuing its existing policy of providing a free period by default upon unboxing and activation.

Satellite communication first appeared in 2022 with the iPhone 14 series. Supported by the network infrastructure of low-Earth-orbit satellite operator Globalstar, Apple provides users in areas without terrestrial cellular or Wi-Fi coverage a low-bandwidth communications channel connecting directly to satellites in space. Initially, the system was used mainly to call Emergency SOS in the event of a serious car crash or when lost and stranded; in subsequent software and hardware updates, Apple gradually broadened satellite capabilities to sharing satellite location with friends and family through the Find My app while offline, calling satellite roadside assistance, and supporting everyday person-to-person satellite text messaging in iOS. Apple initially promised iPhone 14 users a two-year free trial period. Apple has not yet published a clear pricing standard or tariff framework for the satellite service.
