Apple has recently published a patent application showing that the company is developing an intelligent system capable of assessing in real time whether to interrupt users' operations, with the aim of reducing device interference. The patent application was filed on February 5, 2026, and formally disclosed to the public on August 6. The core technology lies in observing user behaviour habits in real time and determining whether to issue alerts according to established rules. For example, when the system detects that a user has been scrolling within a particular application for an extended period, has been continuously staring at the same screen, or has exhibited specific repetitive operation patterns, the device will intervene at an appropriate time; if the preset rules are not triggered, the device remains silent.

The patent also covers an activity summarisation function, whereby the system compiles users' recent operations and received information into brief summaries, enabling users to review missed updates in a concentrated manner after focused work rather than being frequently interrupted. Apple has already introduced notification summaries and the Reduce Interruptions focus mode based on on-device AI in the existing iOS 18.1, but the current mechanism relies primarily on analysing notification content and senders, and does not incorporate users' real-time behaviour, such as call duration or frequent reopening of applications. The new patent adds this dimension, while also helping to improve the contextual accuracy of notification summaries and reducing the generation of inaccurate summaries resulting from incomplete information.

The patent application is still at the pending approval stage, and its publication does not guarantee that the technology will be immediately applied to mass-produced devices. As the concept closely aligns with Apple's existing software features, the patent points to the direction of Apple's future optimisation of the focus mode and notification experience.
