Apple Unveils iPhone 18 Pro With 2nm A20 Pro Chip, Plans 20th-Anniversary Model for 2027

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Apple has launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, retaining the previous generation's exterior design while upgrading internal hardware. The phones run a 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip, a smaller Dynamic Island, a 48-megapixel Fusion main camera with variable aperture, longer battery life and a larger vapor chamber. Apple says the A20 Pro delivers up to 20% higher CPU performance and 40% higher GPU performance than the A19 Pro. A 20th-anniversary model is planned for 2027.

Apple has released the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The two models continue the design language of the previous generation, with changes concentrated in internal hardware. The new phones carry the A20 Pro chip manufactured on a 2-nanometer process, a smaller Dynamic Island, a 48-megapixel Fusion main camera with variable aperture support, longer battery life and a larger vapor chamber cooling system. Apple's published figures show that the A20 Pro can achieve up to 20% higher CPU performance and 40% higher GPU performance than the A19 Pro. The larger vapor chamber improves heat dissipation during prolonged high-load operation, allowing the chip to sustain higher performance for longer.

The first iPhone was launched by Steve Jobs in 2007, and 2027 will mark 20 years since its introduction. Apple plans to release a special 20th-anniversary model in 2027, referred to externally as the "iPhone 20." That model will use curved glass wrapping around the four corners and edges, with further narrowed screen bezels. The goal is to have the display glass bend along all four edges and corners of the chassis, making the metal frame almost invisible in normal use and presenting a front that appears to be made from a single piece of glass. The design is seen as the largest redesign since the iPhone X in 2017; the iPhone X was the first to remove the physical Home button and adopt Face ID, extending the screen to the edges of the device.

The iPhone 18 Pro released in 2026 is the first to carry the A20 Pro, marking a shift from a 3-nanometer process to a 2-nanometer process. On batteries, Apple is studying new batteries using silicon anode materials. Compared with conventional graphite anodes, silicon can store more lithium ions per unit of mass, theoretically increasing capacity without noticeably increasing battery volume.

On physical buttons, Apple is exploring integrating buttons directly into the device frame. The buttons would no longer undergo traditional mechanical movement but would still provide a sensation similar to a physical press through haptic feedback. Apple is also advancing technology to hide Face ID components beneath the display; the iPhone 18 Pro in 2026 did not fully achieve under-display Face ID.

On manufacturing, bending glass to four edges requires solving a series of issues at the same time, including the display panel, glass strength, touch recognition, accidental-touch prevention, drop durability and internal component layout. Whether the final mass-production version can fully achieve these effects remains uncertain.
