Blue Origin's New Glenn Explosion Traced to BE-4 Valve; Vulcan Grounded by Same Engine Type

Blue Origin has traced the May 28, 2026 explosion of its New Glenn rocket at Cape Canaveral to a faulty liquid oxygen main valve in one BE-4 engine, a conclusion announced by Chief Executive Dave Limp on August 5 after hardware recovery and inspection. The company is redesigning the valve and targeting a return to flight before the end of 2026. The same engine type has kept United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket grounded since February 2026 over a separate solid-booster anomaly.

On May 28, 2026, Blue Origin's New Glenn heavy-lift rocket exploded during a static-fire test at Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral, completely destroying the vehicle and severely damaging the launch pad. On August 5, more than two months later, Chief Executive Dave Limp issued a statement on social media presenting the preliminary investigation findings, which traced the fault to a liquid oxygen main valve on one BE-4 engine, a conclusion confirmed through hardware recovery and inspection.

Limp said in the statement that the team had conducted extensive component-level testing and full-engine hot-fire trials to determine the failure mechanism. Work has begun on an improved valve design requiring only modest changes that can be quickly applied to existing engines. Limp did not specify the cause of the valve failure, but said the full fault-tree analysis is still under way.

The Vulcan rocket has been grounded since February 2026 because of a separate anomaly in its solid rocket boosters, manufactured by Northrop Grumman. On a July 21 earnings call, Northrop said it had taken corrective measures on the GEM 63XL solid booster, including a redesign of components that has undergone ground testing, with the improved version scheduled for delivery before the end of 2026. United Launch Alliance has not announced a return-to-flight schedule for Vulcan, nor indicated whether it is considering a launch configuration without the solid boosters.

Blue Origin has previously said it plans to rebuild Launch Complex 36 and aims to return the New Glenn to flight before the end of 2026. Limp's investigation statement, however, did not provide a specific date. With fault identification, design changes and pad reconstruction still in progress, the pace of progress for both companies remains to be seen.
