Crucial Accused of Breaching Warranty: Refuses DDR5 Replacement, Refunds at Original Price
Micron's Crucial brand has been accused of failing to honor a replacement commitment for faulty DDR5 SO-DIMM memory. A user who shipped back a defective kit was told no replacement inventory exists due to the shrinking consumer business, and received only a refund at the original purchase price. The user must also bear 14 euros in return shipping costs, and the faulty product has been withheld. With memory prices up roughly fivefold, the refund is insufficient for a comparable replacement.
Crucial, a brand under Micron, has been accused of failing to honor its replacement commitment in a warranty claim for DDR5 memory. A user posted on a hardware community that they applied for a return authorization for a faulty DDR5 SO-DIMM memory kit, and Crucial initially agreed in communications to replace the product. However, after receiving the returned faulty unit, the company changed its stance, neither providing a replacement memory nor returning the faulty product.
In a customer service email, Crucial stated that because its consumer business is being scaled back, no replacement inventory was available and outbound shipping of warranty products could not be arranged, so only a refund at the original amount shown on the purchase receipt would be issued. The email also noted that the 14 euros in shipping costs incurred by the user in returning the product must be borne by the user and are not covered by the warranty. The user said that with memory prices having risen roughly fivefold from previous levels, a refund at the original price is insufficient to purchase an equivalent replacement, and the faulty product has been withheld.
Since Micron's gradual exit from the consumer business, users have repeatedly encountered difficulties in obtaining warranty replacement services. In this case, Crucial unilaterally decided to issue a refund after receiving the faulty product and refused to return the shipped item, a practice that has drawn criticism from users.
