GM Plans to Launch Self-Developed In-Vehicle AI Assistant in Late 2026

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

General Motors plans to launch its own in-vehicle AI assistant in late 2026, combining conversational AI with vehicle knowledge and telematics for enhanced capabilities. The system will follow the deployment of Gemini AI on millions of 2022 and newer models. The automaker is working with an unnamed large language model provider to develop predictive maintenance and vehicle telemetry features, with data remaining proprietary.

General Motors plans to launch an in-house developed in-vehicle AI system in late 2026, which will be more tailored to its customers' needs.

The product management director said the new native AI assistant will combine conversational AI with GM's vehicle knowledge and OnStar intelligence, offering capabilities beyond generic AI assistants. The assistant will better understand vehicles, driving conditions, and customer needs, simplifying daily vehicle use. Last year, GM announced that Gemini AI robots would be available in 2026 on millions of 2022 and newer models, followed by GM's own AI assistant, but no technical details were provided at that time.

With Gemini, customers can have natural conversations without memorizing specific commands or repeating context. The robot also started offering a "real-time conversation" feature, enabling normal-like dialogue or playing guessing games. It can also control some vehicle functions such as temperature and radio adjustment, but the overall operation is similar to using a smartphone. GM said this is the beginning of its broader AI journey, as AI limited to the top-level vehicle system has limited capabilities.

The Detroit-based automaker is working with an unnamed large language model provider to develop AI functions that can help GM and its owners with predictive maintenance, vehicle telemetry, and other more automotive-focused capabilities. GM emphasized that the relevant data will be its exclusive property, and the goal is to introduce the right technology into the AI assistant to build the necessary deep vehicle expertise.
