Google Translate Upgrade: Android Adds Background Real-Time Interpretation, iOS Gets Listen Mode
Google Translate has introduced new real-time translation features for Android and iOS. The live interpretation mode now supports near-real-time voice conversion in over 70 languages, with more than a third of conversations lasting beyond five minutes. Android users can now run translations in the background while using other apps or with the screen locked, while iOS users gain a new listen mode that plays translated audio through the earpiece when the phone is held to the ear, without headphones or speaker. The features are rolling out globally.
Google Translate has announced a feature upgrade, with real-time translation improvements rolling out on both Android and iOS platforms. The live interpretation mode now supports near-real-time voice conversion in more than 70 languages. According to Google's official data, over one-third of real-time translation conversations now exceed five minutes in duration.
The Android version adds a background operation feature. Previously, users had to keep the translation app in the foreground during interpretation; switching to apps such as Maps, Notes, or hotel bookings would interrupt the translation. The new background mode allows users to freely switch between other apps during real-time translation, and voice recognition and translation continue even when the screen is locked. Users can wake the screen at any time to view the bilingual transcript. Google has indicated that this feature will be made available to iOS users in the future.
The iOS version introduces a new earpiece-based "listen mode" that does not require headphones. When users hold the phone close to their ear, the earpiece automatically plays the translated audio, eliminating the need for wireless headphones or speaker output. This makes it suitable for noisy environments and public settings. The feature was previously exclusive to Android.
Both new features are being rolled out to smartphone users worldwide with the latest version of the app.
