iPhone 18 Pro Max in US Uses Qualcomm Modem While Global Models Get Apple C2

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Apple's updated technical specifications show the US-market iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a Qualcomm cellular modem, while the iPhone 18 Pro and all other regional versions of the Pro Max use Apple's in-house C2 modem. The C2 supports millimeter-wave 5G, faster uploads and about 15% lower power consumption than the C1X. Apple has not specified the Qualcomm modem model.

Apple's updated product technical specifications show that the iPhone 18 Pro Max sold in the United States differs from versions sold elsewhere in its cellular modem configuration. The iPhone 18 Pro is equipped with Apple's in-house third-generation C2 cellular modem worldwide. The iPhone 18 Pro Max also uses the C2 modem in all markets except the United States, making the US version the exception. Clues in system code indicate that the US iPhone 18 Pro Max does not use the C2 modem but instead a cellular modem supplied by Qualcomm. Apple has not officially stated the specific model of that Qualcomm modem.

Apple introduced its first-generation C1 modem with the iPhone 16e in 2025, followed by the C1X in the iPhone Air, and the new-generation C2 is now used in the iPhone 18 Pro series. According to figures published by Apple, the C2 modem supports the millimeter-wave 5G networks required in the US market, offers faster upload speeds and further reduces energy consumption compared with the previous generation. Apple said the new modem achieves a clear improvement in upload performance, with energy efficiency cutting power consumption by about 15% compared with the C1X. Qualcomm announced in 2023 that it would continue supplying smartphone modems to Apple through 2026.

Apple's newly launched foldable iPhone uses the C2 modem uniformly worldwide. In addition to the C2 modem, the iPhone 18 series also carries Apple's in-house N1 wireless networking chip, which supports functions including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and the Thread protocol. It remains unclear how the US version's Qualcomm modem and the global version's C2 modem differ in actual use performance.
