Samsung Plans Inkjet Coating for Galaxy S27 Ultra to Reduce Rear Camera Bump and Glare
Samsung Electronics is developing an inkjet coating process for the Galaxy S27 Ultra's rear camera lenses to reduce the camera bump and improve night-time glare. The technique, developed with Samsung Electro-Mechanics, replaces traditional light-blocking film and adhesive with a matte black spray on lens edges, saving micron-level space. It was tested on a single lens in the Galaxy S26 Ultra and will be expanded to multiple lenses in the S27 Ultra, though some layers will retain conventional film.
Samsung Electronics is developing a new internal lens manufacturing process for its next-generation flagship Galaxy S27 Ultra, planning to use inkjet coating technology to reduce the height of the rear camera bump and improve glare issues during night shooting. The process is being jointly advanced by Samsung Electronics and its lens component partner Samsung Electro-Mechanics, with the core idea being to replace the traditional light-blocking film used to block stray light with a special matte black inkjet coating.
Smartphone lens modules typically consist of six to eight micro-lenses stacked vertically. When light passes through, some is reflected at the lens edges, causing glare, ghosting, or blur. Previously, the industry commonly attached black light-blocking film between lenses and fixed it with adhesive to absorb stray light, but the physical space occupied by the film and adhesive increased the lens module thickness, resulting in a prominent camera bump on the back of the phone. The new inkjet process sprays a matte black coating directly onto the lens edges, eliminating the micron-level space taken up by the film and adhesive, thereby helping to thin the lens module while making room for optical image stabilization and more complex optical designs.
Samsung has already conducted preliminary tests of this technology on a single lens in the Galaxy S26 Ultra and plans to expand its application to multiple lenses, including telephoto and wide-angle, in the Galaxy S27 Ultra. However, some lens layers will still retain the traditional film design in the short term.
