Tesla Files Patent for VOC-Absorbing Camera Housing to Curb Windshield Fogging

Tesla has filed a patent application for a front camera housing made with polypropylene containing microporous zeolite-like particles that absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs), addressing interior windshield fogging that has triggered camera visibility warnings. Tesla recently published a new patent application proposing to integrate materials capable of absorbing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the front camera housing, in order to resolve fogging on the interior surface of the windshield. Previously, some Tesla owners encountered front camera visibility warnings, and the problem persisted even when the exterior of the windshield was completely clean. The cause lies in plastics, adhesives in the camera housing, and other cabin materials that continuously release VOCs, which condense on the interior of the windshield to form a foggy film that gradually impairs the camera's field of view. Cleaning this area typically requires removing the rearview mirror and camera housing; in the United States, Tesla offers this service at a cost of approximately $50 to $89.

The new patent employs a polypropylene material containing microporous crystalline aluminosilicate particles to manufacture plastic components near the camera. These zeolite-like particles contain numerous tiny internal pores capable of adsorbing and trapping VOC molecules. In some designs, the particles account for approximately 70% of the total material weight, with pore sizes ranging from about 3 to 10 angstroms, and materials with different pore sizes can absorb different types of compounds. In addition, the zeolite particles help regulate ambient humidity. Rather than coating VOC-absorbing material onto the surface of components, Tesla has chosen to distribute the particles evenly within the plastic material, enabling the relevant components to continuously absorb VOCs over long-term use.

In September 2025, Musk stated that simplifying the front camera cleaning process is a key focus area for Tesla. Earlier discussions had considered options such as easier-to-remove camera housings and improved ventilation, but the new patent instead seeks to prevent pollutant accumulation at the source. The patent is currently at the application stage and may not necessarily be applied to production models. Tesla has added a front camera cleaning service mode in the 2026.20 software update, allowing owners to troubleshoot issues more easily when FSD performance declines.
