Volvo Updates XC60 and XC90 Plug-In Hybrids With New Battery and DC Fast Charging

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Volvo has unveiled revised plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90, adding a new-generation high-energy-density battery pack and optimized electronic control system. Structural redesign of the battery modules in the central floor tunnel expands usable capacity without reducing cabin or trunk space. Both models gain higher-power AC charging and, for the first time on the plug-in hybrid platform, DC fast charging.

Volvo has officially released the latest revisions to the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the XC60 and XC90. The two models adopt a new-generation high-energy-density traction battery pack and an optimized electronic control system, raising their all-electric driving range. Engineers structurally redesigned the battery modules originally housed in the central floor tunnel, expanding the usable capacity of the battery pack without reducing cabin space or trunk volume. The vehicles also feature a more energy-efficient dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain and an energy recovery system, bringing all-electric driving behavior closer to that of a battery-electric vehicle.

Beyond the battery system, Volvo has also optimized charging efficiency and driving and ride quality. The revised XC60 and XC90 support higher-power AC charging and, for the first time on the plug-in hybrid platform, introduce a faster DC fast-charging protocol to shorten waiting times for en-route charging. The in-car infotainment system is deeply integrated with the battery thermal management system, allowing it to anticipate energy allocation based on the navigation route and automatically bring the battery pack to the ideal charging temperature before arrival at a charging facility.
