Apple Expands iPhone Third-Party Game Controller Support as Console Titles Arrive

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Apple is broadening third-party game controller support for the iPhone as processor performance improves and console and PC titles such as Resident Evil, Death Stranding and Assassin's Creed Mirage arrive on the device. Dedicated controllers from Backbone, Razer, GameSir and Rotor Riot are increasing, many with clamp-on designs that turn the phone into a handheld-style device. Cloud gaming services including Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW are also driving controller use, though the mobile game library remains limited compared with consoles and PCs.

Apple is continuing to improve third-party game controller support for the iPhone. As iPhone processor performance keeps rising, large games originally built for consoles and PCs, including Resident Evil, Death Stranding and Assassin's Creed Mirage, have successively arrived on the iPhone. For many years previously, mobile games relied mainly on touchscreen controls, and external controllers were the choice of a minority of players.

Dedicated controller products for iPhone users are steadily increasing, involving brands such as Backbone, Razer, GameSir and Rotor Riot. Most of these products use a clamp-on design that turns the phone into a handheld console-like form. Some products are specifically optimized for Apple devices and integrate iOS ecosystem functions. Apple is also advancing game ecosystem connectivity across the iPhone, iPad and Mac.

In streaming, the growth of platforms such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW allows players to access game content that previously could only run on high-performance devices through their phones, with physical controllers serving as companion devices for operating that content. Compared with dedicated handheld devices, the phone itself has computing power and a display, so users can gain a handheld-like experience by adding a controller set.

At present, the scale of the mobile game library remains limited compared with console and PC platforms, and the storage space, battery life and heat dissipation required for high-quality mobile games are also drawing player attention.
