BYD August Sales Exceed 440,000 Units, Leapmotor, Harmony and Zeekr Post Strong Gains

In August 2026, several new-energy vehicle brands released their delivery figures. BYD sold more than 440,000 vehicles, with overseas sales exceeding 180,000 units, setting another record high. Leapmotor delivered 103,129 vehicles globally, up 80.7% year on year. Harmony Intelligent Mobility delivered 42,101 units, with cumulative deliveries in the year up 10.8% year on year. Zeekr delivered 36,981 new vehicles, up 109.8% year on year. The August passenger vehicle sales ranking has not yet been published.

In 2026, the new-energy vehicle market continued to grow despite reduced subsidies and weaker policy support. The tax support system is being phased out: at the beginning of the year, the purchase tax on new-energy vehicles was adjusted from full exemption to a 50% reduction, with a cap of RMB 15,000 per vehicle. In July, three government departments issued a notice clarifying that vehicle and vessel tax incentives for energy-saving and new-energy vehicles would be withdrawn from 2027. In September, the consumption tax on lithium batteries was reinstated.

From 2020 to 2022, as the national purchase subsidy per vehicle was gradually reduced and eventually eliminated, the penetration rate of new-energy passenger vehicles rose from below 6% to nearly 28%, and continued to climb thereafter, reaching 47.9% by the end of 2025. In 2026, after a brief fluctuation at the start of the year, the penetration rate of new-energy vehicles recovered to above 50%, and in July it exceeded 60% for a single month.
