China-led Solid-State Battery Standard Wins IEC Approval; BYD Sets Rollout Timetable

China's proposal for an international standard on solid-state batteries for electric vehicles has been approved at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the world's first such standard in the field. Co-developed with experts from France, South Korea and Japan, it will define testing specifications and give global automakers a unified benchmark for development and production. BYD said in February 2025 it plans batch demonstration installations around 2027 and large-scale deployment after 2030. The industry still needs breakthroughs in technology, manufacturing and cost before commercialization.

An international standard proposal submitted by China, "Secondary Lithium-ion Batteries for the Drive of Electric Vehicles – Application Guide, Test Items and Conditions for Solid-State Batteries", has been approved at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The standard is the world's first international standard in the solid-state battery segment, led by China with experts from France, South Korea, Japan and other countries contributing to its development. The State Administration for Market Regulation said the standard will help share China's advanced battery technology concepts globally and support upgrades to the battery industry and the broader energy transition.

Solid-state batteries are widely regarded as an important direction for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, offering longer range, higher safety and greater performance stability than conventional liquid batteries. Built on China's research and development experience in solid-state batteries, the international standard will clearly define testing specifications. The market regulator said the standard will give global automakers a unified benchmark when developing and producing solid-state batteries, helping to accelerate the rollout of safer, longer-range electric vehicles and advance the new energy industry.

In February 2026, Ouyang Minggao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said all-solid-state batteries represent a major strategic direction for next-generation batteries, with rapid progress in the industry but many challenges still to be resolved.

Over the past two years, several automakers have disclosed timelines for deploying all-solid-state batteries in vehicles. In February 2025, BYD indicated it would start batch demonstration installations of all-solid-state batteries around 2027, with large-scale integration after 2030.

The solid-state battery industry is currently at a development stage where various technical routes and concepts are used interchangeably. The successful approval of the standard proposal will help the sector establish unified terminology, testing standards and testing methods, avoiding low-level duplication and resource waste. Commercialization of solid-state batteries still requires breakthroughs in technology, manufacturing and cost; technical difficulties such as solid-solid interfaces are not fully resolved, and the industry overall remains in the research, development and testing phase.
