China Secures ISO Approval for Two Thermal Management Test Standards
China has successfully initiated two international standards under the ISO for testing thermal management systems in electric vehicle battery packs. The standards aim to establish globally unified performance evaluation methods. Additionally, China's proposed IEC standard for discharge guidelines for retired batteries has advanced to the committee draft stage, reflecting its growing role in international standardization.
China has recently advanced the development of international standards in key areas such as thermal management of power batteries and recycling of retired batteries, leveraging its industrial practices within the frameworks of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
The thermal management system of power batteries directly affects battery lifespan and safety. China has driven the successful initiation of two international standards in this field under the ISO: "Electrically propelled road vehicles — Test methods for thermal management systems of traction battery packs and systems — Part 1: General testing" and "Electrically propelled road vehicles — Test methods for thermal management systems of traction battery packs and systems — Part 2: Liquid cooling/heating systems." These two international standards aim to establish globally unified performance evaluation methods for thermal management systems of power batteries.
Battery recycling is a critical part of the full lifecycle of the industry, yet international standard-setting in this area remains at an early stage. Chinese experts are actively participating in the development of all relevant international standards, including battery performance assessment methods and classification, as well as general guidelines for recycling retired batteries. China's proposed IEC international standard, "Discharge guidelines for retired batteries," has been successfully initiated and has now advanced to the committee draft (CD) stage.
Going forward, the State Administration for Market Regulation will guide professional forces in the production, use, and recycling of power batteries to participate more in international standard research, deepen practical exchanges on standardization with other countries, and translate mature domestic industrial practices into international standard experience.
