Managers Turn to AI Coaching Tools for Difficult Employee Conversations

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

A July 2026 survey found that 74% of chief executives and business leaders believe their subordinate managers can handle difficult employee conversations alone with full confidence, while 42% of managers say they know what they want to convey but struggle with how to express it, and only 20% would prepare such conversations alone without a framework, coaching guide, or human resources involvement. Tools from Posh, LHH, and Xactly offer role-play feedback, though legal and privacy risks remain.

Management is beginning to use artificial intelligence tools when holding difficult conversations with employees. A survey conducted in July 2026 found that 74% of chief executives and business leaders believe their subordinate managers can handle tricky employee-related conversations alone with full confidence; 42% of managers said they know what they want to convey but have difficulty with how to express it; and only 20% of managers said they would be willing to prepare such conversations alone without a framework, coaching guide, or human resources involvement. The survey also showed that managers have relatively clear blind spots in offering constructive criticism, anticipating employee reactions, and remaining objective.

Relevant tools on the market fall into free and paid categories with differing functions: some support only text interaction, while others support voice interaction; some tools incorporate data such as employee personality profiles, while others are more general. Such tools can provide guidance on tone, expression, and information organization. Managers can run multiple rounds of simulation for the same scenario, for example first simulating an employee reacting angrily to guidance, then simulating an emotional employee, to cover different directions.

Existing cases show that one manager habitually stated the bad news at the start of a conversation, and after a tool prompt changed to first explaining the employee's contributions and value to the company before moving into the negative information. In addition, such tools can be used around the clock, unrestricted by the scheduling of human coaches.

Using such tools involves legal and privacy risks. Suppliers' data retention policies, access permissions, and artificial intelligence model training policies should likewise be taken into consideration.
