Apple Protests UK CMA Plan, Calls App Store Intervention Intrusive; 2025 UK Transactions Over $60 Billion

Apple has formally opposed the UK Competition and Markets Authority's proposed regulatory plan for big tech, calling it intrusive and illegal. The plan would require Apple and Google to open their app stores to rivals. Apple said the CMA would intervene in pricing and limit commission scope, giving it excessive jurisdiction. Apple noted its App Store facilitated over $60 billion in UK transactions in 2025 and argued there is no evidence regulation would lower prices. The CMA has not responded. Its executive director previously said fees must be based on cost and value. The CMA also proposes opening iPhone NFC for rival payment services. The UK, following the EU, designated Apple and Google as having strategic market status in October 2025.
