iPhone 18 Pro to Feature Variable Aperture, Smaller Dynamic Island, C2 Baseband and 2nm A20 Pro Chip
Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro is expected to feature a variable aperture main camera, a Dynamic Island reduced in size by 35%, a self-developed C2 baseband chip, and an A20 Pro processor built on a 2nm process. The Dynamic Island change is the first screen cutout reduction in four years, while the C2 baseband replaces Qualcomm parts. The 2nm chip improves performance and efficiency.
For imaging, the main camera of the new model will feature a variable aperture lens, allowing users to adjust the amount of light entering the lens to optimise portrait bokeh, low-light shooting and landscape quality. Full functional details are scheduled to be announced at the launch event. On the display front, the Dynamic Island design will undergo a significant change, with its size reduced by 35%. This marks the first time Apple has shrunk the screen cutout area in four years, since the Dynamic Island was first introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro. The new visual layout of Siri in iOS 27 also confirms this design direction, with the screen-to-body ratio set to improve further. In terms of communication modules, the iPhone 18 Pro will adopt Apple's self-developed second-generation C2 baseband chip, replacing Qualcomm basebands. In 2025, Apple's first modem, the C1, was deployed in some iPhone models, but was not included across the entire lineup. The C2 chip offers improvements over its predecessor in network speed, power consumption and privacy protection. Regarding the chipset, the iPhone 18 Pro will be the first to feature the A20 Pro processor built on a 2nm process. Compared with the current 3nm process, the 2nm process allows more transistors to be integrated within a similar chip area, thereby enhancing performance and energy efficiency. The A20 Pro will also adopt wafer-level multi-chip module packaging, which shortens the physical distance and signal transmission paths between the processor and memory, improving signal integrity, thermal performance and data transmission power consumption.
