Moutai Hosts Red Sorghum Harvest Season as Organic Area Reaches 1 Million Mu

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Kweichow Moutai hosted its 2026 red sorghum harvest season in Renhuai, Guizhou, on August 7, inviting guests and contracted farmers to celebrate the harvest across more than 300,000 mu in the Chishui River valley. The company's organic sorghum base, established in 2001, now covers 1 million mu across five counties. Moutai's seventh-generation '519' sorghum variety, developed in 2025, has a growth period shortened to 118 days. The company's circular economy unit processes 330,000 tons of brewing byproducts annually, creating more than 1,200 jobs and producing 92,000 tons of organic fertilizer.

On August 7, 2026, the 2026 China Farmers' Harvest Festival Gala Renhuai Special Venue and the Bingwu Year Moutai Red Sorghum Harvest Season were held in Renhuai, Guizhou Province. Kweichow Moutai invited guests from all sectors and contracted farmers to jointly celebrate the red sorghum harvest. The harvest season activities covered field areas including Longbao Community in Luban Subdistrict, Renhuai, showcasing the harvest scene of more than 300,000 mu of red sorghum in the Chishui River valley.

Red sorghum officially became the designated raw material for Moutai liquor in 2008. It features thick skins, small grains, and high amylopectin content; its high glutinousness and moderate tannin content facilitate the metabolism of brewing microorganisms. In 2022, Moutai launched its 'Seed Plan' and has preserved nearly 600 germplasm resources to date. In 2025, Moutai, together with multiple partners, cultivated the seventh-generation '519' red sorghum variety, shortening the growth period to 118 days and further enhancing glutinousness, marking progress toward self-controlled seed sources.

Moutai's organic sorghum base was established in 2001, covering five counties — Renhuai, Xishui, Jinsha, Bozhou, and Huichuan — with an organically certified area of 1 million mu. The base adopts a collaborative management model of 'enterprise-led base, base-enriched farmers' and 'Moutai + government + base + cooperatives,' implementing an 'order-based planting, protected-price procurement' production and sales system. It applies industrial thinking to agricultural production, improving production efficiency and output scale while providing employment opportunities for farmers.

Moutai's circular economy investment company has built an industrial cycle of 'distiller's grains — organic fertilizer — sorghum planting — liquor making,' processing 330,000 tons of brewing byproducts annually and directly creating more than 1,200 jobs. The company has developed the 'Zaobao' brand, processing 50,000 tons of distiller's grains annually to produce 20,000 tons of fermented feed, supporting grain-saving ecological livestock farming. The organic fertilizer project produces 92,000 tons of organic fertilizer annually, distributed free of charge to farmers through the materials supply center for use in sorghum and wheat planting bases, improving soil and promoting yield increases.
