Tesla Cybercab Makes China Debut in Beijing and Shanghai Static Displays

Tesla began a nationwide China tour of its Cybercab robotaxi on September 17, 2026, with static displays in Shanghai and Beijing. The two-seat vehicle has no steering wheel, pedals or mirrors, measures 4.44 metres long and weighs 1,412 kilograms, and uses a 47.6 kWh battery. Tesla China said the tour involves no sales plans and no robotaxi service in mainland China.

On September 17, Tesla's Cybercab robotaxi opened the Shanghai stop of its nationwide China tour at HKR International's Xingye Taikoo Hui, while the model went on display the same day at the Tesla experience store in Beijing's China Central Place. This is the first public showing of the Cybercab in the Chinese market since its official launch in the United States in early September 2026. The Beijing stop is themed "Tomorrow's World, Right Before Your Eyes." Tesla China stated on September 16, 2026 that the China tour is a static display only and does not involve arrangements to put the Cybercab on sale in the Chinese market, and that Tesla has no plans to conduct autonomous ride-hailing operations in mainland China.

The Cybercab on display is light gold. Its cabin has no steering wheel, accelerator or brake pedal, and no traditional rear-view mirrors. Human-machine interaction is provided by two bench-style seats and a 22-inch central touchscreen. The doors are butterfly doors that open upward, and the rear uses a hatchback boot. The vehicle is 4.44 metres long and 1.6 metres wide, with a kerb weight of 1,412 kilograms. The seat height is level with a standard wheelchair to make it easier for passengers to enter and exit from one side and move into a seated position. Braille markings are fitted on the doors and overhead light area, control buttons have tactile guides, and two Type-C ports sit below the central screen. According to Tesla's statistics, more than 85% of taxi trips involve one or two passengers, while parties of more than two account for 15%, so the vehicle has only two seats.

The Cybercab is equipped with eight cameras and uses a pure vision plus end-to-end neural network approach, sharing the same technical lineage as the driver-assistance systems in Model 3 and Model Y vehicles sold in China, and using the same AI 4 hardware. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's vice president of AI software, previously disclosed that Tesla had completed 1 million miles (about 1.6 million kilometres) of unsupervised Robotaxi operation with no human intervention either in the vehicle or in the back office. For braking, the vehicle eliminates brake fluid and conventional hydraulic braking in favour of brake-by-wire, using electrical signals to control motors at each wheel that clamp the brake discs.

In manufacturing, the Cybercab uses an unboxed parallel assembly process, with the vehicle divided into six modules that are completed before entering the production line for final assembly. Tesla says the current production takt time for a single Model 3 or Model Y is about 30 seconds, while the Cybercab's target is 5 to 10 seconds. Body panels use single-piece injection moulding, with the gold colour injected directly into the material and no painting required. Coating thickness can reach 5 to 10 times that of conventional paint, and scratches do not expose the underlying metal. Tesla's published figures show the process can cut greenhouse gas emissions from the relevant parts in manufacturing by 35% and reduce VOC emissions from the painting stage to zero.

Tesla estimates the Cybercab's travel cost can fall to USD 0.2 per mile, or about RMB 0.84 per kilometre. On energy efficiency, the vehicle carries a 47.6 kWh battery pack, has a laboratory-cycle range of 673 kilometres and a drag coefficient below 0.2, travels about 9.8 kilometres per kWh, and consumes 10.2 kWh per 100 kilometres. The Cybercab currently serves only Tesla's Robotaxi fleet and is not sold to individuals. As of early September 2026, Tesla had 420 autonomous vehicles registered in Texas, of which 45 were Cybercabs and the remaining 375 were Model Y vehicles. Forty-five Cybercabs were already in operation in Austin, against Tesla's stated target of 1,000.

On operations, Tesla says existing Cybercabs abroad accept orders 24 hours a day, drive themselves to a nearby Supercharger when power is low, and resume service after charging is complete. On safety regulation, the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said it is assessing whether the Cybercab's design without a steering wheel or pedals complies with federal safety regulations. US federal rules generally require vehicles to have manual driving controls and limit the number of vehicles without steering wheels that may be sold.
