Tesla Plans Safety and Collision-Avoidance Features for FSD v15

Tesla plans to add safety and collision-avoidance features to FSD v15, with AI chief Ashok Elluswamy saying the system will predict hazards earlier and react faster using a larger neural network. Early versions are being tested on some Robotaxi vehicles, but no release date for ordinary owners has been announced. Tesla's North America safety report says FSD Supervised vehicles average one severe airbag-deploying crash every about 5.1 million to 5.7 million miles.

Tesla plans to add multiple safety and collision-avoidance features to FSD v15, with a focus on improving how quickly the system predicts hazards and takes evasive action. Tesla has not announced a specific rollout date for FSD v15 to ordinary vehicle owners.

Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's AI chief, said in response to an incident involving emergency evasive action that FSD v15 will predict hazards earlier, react faster, and improve safety and collision-avoidance capabilities. In that incident, a vehicle was pulling out of a parking lot when a Tesla vehicle equipped with the assisted-driving system steered to avoid it, preventing a potential collision.

FSD v15 will use a larger neural network and strengthen the link between environmental prediction and vehicle control. Tesla has already been testing an early version on some Robotaxi operating vehicles, while pushing features such as automatic collision avoidance to existing owners. Such features can intervene in vehicle control while a driver is manually driving.

Tesla's published North America vehicle safety report shows that vehicles with FSD Supervised enabled average one severe collision involving airbag deployment about every 5.1 million to 5.7 million miles driven. Tesla estimates that the average interval between comparable accidents for vehicles in the United States is about 699,000 miles, and on that basis says the frequency of severe collisions for FSD Supervised is about seven times lower.

Under a different comparison, vehicles equipped with active safety features such as automatic emergency braking but driven manually average one severe collision about every 2.1 million miles. On that basis, the accident-rate advantage for FSD Supervised is about 2.4 times to 2.7 times.

European data Tesla published in 2026 showed that FSD Supervised's safety performance in the Netherlands was about 3.5 times that of manual driving. Across more than 100 million kilometers of driving data in five European countries approved for testing, FSD Supervised's collision frequency was about 4.1 times lower than that of manually driven vehicles equipped with active safety features.
