Global Automakers Restore Physical Controls as European Safety Ratings Include Buttons

International automakers including Audi, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are adjusting their in-cabin interaction designs. Audi has confirmed that its next-generation interiors will no longer be dominated by oversized screens, and will instead feature physical rotary knobs with damping feedback. Volkswagen has set a plan to equip all new models with physical controls for high-frequency functions such as air conditioning and volume by 2026. BMW will retain its iDrive rotary knob and physical air-conditioning buttons. Mercedes-Benz is gradually restoring physical operation modules on steering wheels and center consoles.

Domestic Chinese brands are also revising their product approach. New models from BYD, Geely, Changan and Chery have added standalone physical buttons in the center console area. The Geely Galaxy series retains physical rotary knobs for air conditioning and driving modes. Multiple new BYD models now provide separate physical controls for volume, hazard lights and other functions, rather than relying entirely on touchscreen operation.

Purely touchscreen interfaces pose safety risks. Adjusting functions while driving requires taking the driver's eyes off the road, and controls are prone to accidental activation on rough surfaces, when wearing gloves, or in bright light conditions. European NCAP has now incorporated physical controls into its assessment criteria, with cabin design evaluation shifting toward operational safety and efficiency.
