China Industrial Profits Up 18.8% in Jan-May 2026; Nonferrous, Electronics Double, Auto, Steel Slump
In the first five months of 2026, China's industrial enterprises above designated size posted total profits of 3.14 trillion yuan, up 18.8% year-on-year. The profit margin on revenue reached 5.56%, up 0.63 percentage points. Profits of state-controlled enterprises rose 19.6%, while private firms grew 10.7%. By sector, nonferrous metals smelting and electronics manufacturing saw profits more than double, with gains of 117.1% and 103.9% respectively. In contrast, auto manufacturing profits fell 19.8% and ferrous metal smelting dropped 37.4%. The asset-liability ratio of industrial firms stood at 58.2% at end-May, up 0.3 percentage points.
